Martin Leads the Marlins to a 3-0 victory Over R-MC
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior Tanner Martin scored all three goals to help the Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team to a 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory Wednesday evening.
The win keeps the Marlins' hopes alive of possibly hosting an ODAC quarterfinal match in next week's conference tournament. With a win over the fourth-place team, Randolph-Macon, the Marlins now sit just three points behind the Yellow Jackets. A Marlin win on Saturday, paired with an R-MC loss, would create at least a tie for fourth place and the final quarterfinal hosting opportunity.
The Marlin offense exploded in the first half, racking up three goals in less than ten minutes. Martin recorded the first goal of the match at the 15:01 mark off an assist by Bennett Wiley. Just a little over a minute later, Ricky Perrault sped by a Yellow Jackets defender and crossed the ball to Martin who tapped the ball into the net for his second score of the match.
Martin dribbled by two defenders, beat the keeper, and shot on an open net, recording his first career hat trick at the 21:25 mark.
The Marlins offense translated to the defensive side of the pitch, limiting Randolph-Macon to six shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets best chance to score came at the 88:43 mark in the second half when Seth Mannis attempted a shot that was saved by Jay Fox's outstretched hands.
Fox earned six saves for the Marlins in the net while Randolph-Macon's (9-4-2/5-3) Brian Breslin stopped three balls.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-5-4/3-2-3) takes on Shenandoah (0-16/0-8) Saturday for Senior Day at 4:30 p.m.
