Late Goal Sinks Marlins at EMU
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Eastern Mennonite University scored with less than three minutes left to defeat the Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team, 2-1, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday.
Eastern Mennonite scored the lone goal of the first half as Juan Luna found Jesus Trejo for a header and his first goal of the season.
That lead carried until midway through the second half when Andrew Duenke ripped a shot on a breakaway that deflected off a defender and into the net, tying the contest at the 64:17 mark.
The match looked destined for overtime when Trejo, fresh off his first goal of the season, capitalized to win the contest for the Royals. Carlos Flores-Melgar found Trejo on a good pass into the box to finish off the ball with 2:53 to play in regulation.
The Marlins and Royals each put a shot on net in that final three minutes, but the 2-1 score held.
Eastern Mennonite held a 25-21 edge in shots while the Marlins led 8-6 in corner kicks.
Matthew Overacker stopped nine shots for Eastern Mennonite (6-7-4/1-3-2) while Jay Fox stopped nine as well.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-5-3/2-2-2) travels to Guilford College for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest on Saturday.
