Lloyd Leads Marlins to Homecoming Victory
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Freshman Reggie Lloyd scored twice on Saturday afternoon as the Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team won an impressive 3-0 match against Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
Lloyd scored two goals for the Marlins in the first half, with both coming just minutes apart. His first goal came at the 29:10 mark when a long pass out of the defensive side of the field went over the top. Lloyd reached the ball first, took two dribbles and hit a hard, low shot off the keeper into the center of the goal.
He second score came at 31:07 when he spun around a defender at the top of the box, finding a seam for a shot into the left side of the goal.
The final goal for the Marlins came in the final minute as Virginia Wesleyan found itself in a 2-on-1 break. Miciah Brown drove up the left side, drawing out the goalkeeper, then passed to Ricky Perrault for the open look.
The Marlins explosive offensive attack had 12 shots on goal and their offense translated to the defensive side of the ball. The Marlins defense only gave up five shots on goal. In the second half, the Eagles did not take a shot on goal until after the 75:00 mark.
Mark Davis earned nine saves on the day in the goal for the Bridgewater (6-4-2/1-2). The Marlins Jay Fox had five saves on the day, making that his seventh consecutive match with at least three saves.
Virginia Wesleyan (4-4-2/1-1-1) travels to Ferrum College for a 6 p.m. non-conference start on Monday.
