Marlins Rally to Down Averett on the Road
DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University scored the first goal of the game, but Virginia Wesleyan College responded with two goals to capture a 2-1 victory on the road in non-conference action.
Averett struck first at the 10:14 mark when Sebastian Kjernholm found Tobias Andreasson who beat the keeper to the left side.
The Virginia Wesleyan defense made the 2-1 lead last for the final 71 minutes of action, despite Averett attempting 20 shots in the match. Keeper Jay Fox followed up his career night against CNU by setting a new career high with 12 saves against the Cougars.
Averett (1-5) did an impressive job as well, keeping the Marlins off the board the rest of match behind 11 saves from Austin Bramhall.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Averett 23-20 while maintaining a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-2-1) travels to defending champion Washington and Lee University on Saturday for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener set for a 3 p.m. start.
