VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 17-3 victory over Randolph Saturday afternoon on Birdsong Field. With the win, the Marlins improve to 8-3 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. Randolph slides to 3-7 on the season (0-3 ODAC).
It was a slow start to this game as only two goals were produced in the opening quarter. The WildCats netted the first one, coming at the 3:04 mark. Brady Morrison would even things back up with just a minute left in the period. Greg Gaetano and Joey Raymond would each register a goal in the second, but a late Randolph goal narrowed the lead to 3-2 going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, it was all Marlins as both the offense and defense stepped up. The home side would go on a 7-0 run over the next 20 minutes with all seven goals coming by way of Jason Thibeault or Gaetano. Randolph broke up the streak midway through the fourth with a goal, but seven Marlin goals over the final eight minutes sealed the conference victory.
Eight different Marlins put the ball in the net on the day led by Gaetano who finished with five. He was followed closely by Thibeault who tucked away four. Morrison and Nick Barnas both came away with multiple goals as well (2), while Nathan Sheirburn, Nick Langan, Dante Castillo and Joey Rayman all cashed in one.
Virginia Wesleyan dominated the groundball game with face off specialists Sheirburn and Castillo combining for 11.
In goal, Kyle Leeming demonstrated great defense, turning aside 11 WildCat shots.
Men's lacrosse returns to action again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the squad welcomes Hampden-Sydney to town for a game underneath the lights.
