SALEM, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (5-2/1-1 ODAC) traveled to Roanoke College (4-3/1-0 ODAC) in a conference match up Sunday afternoon. The Marlins fell to the Maroons 27-13 as the Marlins could not stop the offensive power of Roanoke.
It took just over a minute for the Maroons to get on the board, but the Marlins pushed back, controlling much of the action following the minutes after the opening goal. The Marlins posted three shots including two during a man-up opportunity. The Marlins were finally able to find the back of the net when Greg Gaetano beat the keeper off an assist from Andrew Johnson to tie up the game at 1-1. But a seven-goal first quarter for the Maroons would give them a four-goal advantaged heading into the second. Four goals by four different Marlins during the second quarter would make the score 13-7 going into the half.
Virginia Wesleyan opened up the second half with two goals from Brady Morrison and Joey Rayman cutting their deficit to just four. But three straight goals by the Maroons put them up 9-16 with eight minutes to go in the third quarter. Virginia Wesleyan finished out the third finding the back of the net two more times sending them into the fourth quarter down 18-11.
The Maroons would finish out the game scoring nine more. The Marlins were able to add two more to their total with goals from Rayman and Jon Onia in the final quarter.
Seven different Marlins found their name on the score sheet with Rayman's four goals leading the way. Nate Sheirburn posted a hat trick while Brady Morrison had two. Jon Onia, Cole Maquire, Greg Gaetano, and Dante Castillo each notched one of their own as well.
Kyle Leeming got the start in net for the Marlins saving 19 shots in 58 minutes of play. Phillip Venanzi wrapped up the game in net making one stop.
Men's lacrosse returns to the field on Tuesday for a non-conference match up at Christopher Newport University at 7:00pm.
