LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team picked up its first ODAC victory of the year, downing Randolph 23-6 on the road Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Marlins go to 3-4 on the year and 1-1 in conference play. Randolph remains winless at 0-7 (0-2).
It was an offensive blowout for the Marlins as the team put up 23 goals, which ranks seventh in school history and the most since 2009. VWU outshot the Wildcats by 50 (74-24), led by Nick Zepko and Tyler Conn who both netted four goals. Joe Couture was right behind them recording three for himself. Rounding out the scoring was Jacob Harkins (2), Dante Castillo (2), Joey Rayman (2), Brady Morrison (2), Sean Coon (1), Josh Davis (1), Matt Baldwin (1) and Pete Langan (1).
A big reason for the dominance came at the face off "X" as the marlins controlled 25 of the 33 taken. The visiting squad also controlled the majority of 50-50 balls, scooping up 52 as a team. Castillo helped in a big way, recording a career-high nine.
Defense played a big part too as the squad caused season-high 15 turnovers. Between the pipes was mostly manned by Cory Austin, who turned aside three shots over 45 minutes. Chris McTague and Philip Venanzi covered the final 15 minutes, each coming up with one save.
Men's lacrosse returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team welcomes nearby rival Christopher Newport University for a game at Birdsong under the lights.
