SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team earned its second win of the year, downing Neumann University, 18-6, Sunday afternoon at Daffin Park in Savannah Ga. With the win, the Marlins are now 2-1 on the season.
The Marlins came right out of the gates, scoring the game's only two goals of the first period. Joey Rayman kicked things off as he scored just over three minutes in and Tyler Conn doubled up the score with a goal with 57 seconds left. Neumann got right back in it though, cashing in two to tie it up with 3:39 into the second. It didn't stay that way long though as the Marlins scored four of the next five, including three from Matt Baldwin, and carried a six three lead into the halftime intermission.
In the third, VWU went on a tear, scoring four unanswered through the first 4:44. The Knights stopped the run with two of their own, but the Marlins tacked on one more from Joe Couture before the period's end.
By the fourth, it was a dominating performance from Virginia Welseyan. Up 11-5 to start the team tagged six unanswered to start the stanza and bookended it with one more under the minute mark.
As a team, the squad doubled up the Knight's shot total, 61-30. Rayman led the squad with four goals on the day. Baldwin, Couture and Greg Gaetano each nabbed three to aide the effort. Conn also did well to distribute the ball as he dished out three assists to go along with his first quarter goal.
Chris McTague earned the majority of minutes in net, stopping 16 shots on 55 minutes of play.
At the faceoff 'X' the Marlins held the 17-28 edge, while they went a perfect 27-27 on clearances.
Men's lacrosse returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team welcomes Eastern University to Birdsong Field for the Marlins' home opener.
