Messiah slips past Virginia Wesleyan at the Sportsplex

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Virginia Wesleyan College rally that started with 9:35 remaining in Wednesday's game fell short at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex where the Messiah College Falcons posted a 9-7 non-conference victory.

Sophomore Levi Williams-Whitney (Red Deer, Alberta/Hunting Hills) scored with 9:35 remaining to cut a Messiah (4-3) lead to 9-6 and senior Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored at the 6:19 mark.  VWC (3-3) played an aggressive game in front of its goal in the waning minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

Messiah opened the game with a three-goal run, but the Falcons saw the lead wiped out when VWC came back with three consecutive goals.  Junior Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Name-Hill Academy) scored two in a row and senior Joe Papetti  (Edgewater, Md./South River) added the third to make it a 3-3 game after one quarter.

The teams traded goals in the early minutes of the second quarter, before Messiah produced another three-goal run to take the lead for good. The three goals were part of a 5-1 scoring surge spanning the third and fourth quarters that left VWC scrambling to catch-up in the fourth.

Currier topped Virginia Wesleyan scoring with three goals and Moran added two.
Tyler Goglio (Franklin, Wis./Heritage Christian) led Messiah with a pair of goals.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, March 21, when the Marlins host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game beginning at 1 p.m.
