Marlins' offense stalls in 11-5 loss at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's high-powered offense never really got on track Saturday as the Marlins dropped an 11-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference decision at Hampden-Sydney College.

The Marlins (5-3, 1-2 ODAC), who entered the game ranked No.12 offensively, got off to a slow start against the Tigers and never recovered in the first half.  Hampden-Sydney (5-4,3-0 ODAC) led 2-0 after the first quarter and 5-1 at halftime.

VWC sophomore Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Name-Hill Academy) scored the first two goals of the third quarter to pull the Marlins within a 5-3 score, but that's as close as it would get. H-SC outscored the Marlins 4-0 the remainder of the quarter to take a 10-3 lead into the last quarter.

Currier and junior Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored to help the Marlins outscore the tigers in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough.

Currier and Moran accounted for all of VWC's goals, with Currier finishing with three and Moran with two.  James Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) and Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) scored three goals each for H-SC.

Rory Finnegan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) produced 14 saves for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, April 5, hosting Bridgewater College in ODAC competition at 1 p.m.
