VWU Sits Sixth in Talented Field at O'Briant-Jensen
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University men's golf team is currently in sixth place after the opening round of the O'Briant-Jensen Tournament held at the Sedgefield Country Club on Monday.
The Marlins trail only ranked teams, as eight ranked squads took to the course. No. 6 Methodist University leads the pack with a 6-over, 290 after the first day. No. 2-ranked Huntingdon College is two strokes off the pace of Methodist, followed by No. 17 Guilford College who carded a 12-over, 296.
No. 26 Carnegie Mellon and No. 8 Calvin College rounded out the top five. Virginia Wesleyan is one stroke back of Calvin after shooting a 17-over, 301.
Jakob Keidel led the Marlins with a 2-over, 73 to sit in a tie for ninth place. Carter Morgan is tied for 16th after a 3-over, 74. Jacob Laughlin and Keith Cooper each shot a 6-over, 77 while Kevin Duffy rounded out the Marlins with an 8-over, 79.
Mark Connelly, the 45th-ranked player in the country, leads all individuals after shooting a 3-under, 68. Nineteen golfers in the field appeared in the most recent Golfstat rankings. No. 63 Grant Powell from Greensboro College is tied for second with Trevor Arashiro of Carnegie Mellon with a 1-under, 70.
The Marlins will take to the course for the final round on Tuesday.
