BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team dropped its game to Montclair State, 80-77, Monday evening in the second game of the Moravian College Roosevelt Classic. With the result, the Marlins go to 5-7 while Red Hawks improve to 10-3. At the conclusion of the Classic, Tim Fisher was named to the All-Tournament Team
After Montclair got out to an early lead, VWU battled back, taking its first lead at 9:07 in the first courtesy of back-to-back 3-pointers from Fisher and Lamont Steward. Those shots would lay the foundation for a 13-0 run that put the Marlins in charge going into the half, 40-33.
The Red Hawks would go on a mini run of their own to start the second stanza, evening things up at 42-42. From then on neither team could find a healthy lead on the other. Montclair would go up eight with under a minute left but another set of back-to-back threes from Corey Pelham and Steward made it a one possession game. Unfortunately, time ran out on the Marlin comeback handing them their seventh loss of the year.
Steward finished the year with a season-high 26 points, going 50% from the field (9-18) including four from distance. Tim Fisher also pitched in as he notched sixth double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 boards.
Men's basketball will return to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday as the team hosts Randolph-Macon.
