DANVILLE, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team left Danville, Va. with its second non-conference win to improve to 3-2 on the season. With the 72-54 loss, the Averett University Cougars fell to 0-5. Tim Fisher who scored a career high of 25 points to secure his second double-double of the season as he also tacked on 11 rebounds on the night.
Other than at 2-2, the Marlins never trailed for the entire course of the game. This came as a result of four Marlins finishing with double digit points as Keijon Honore, R.J. Nicholson, Tim Fisher, and Percy Burt scored 14, 12, 25, and 14 points respectively.
Percy Burt's dunk in transition to take an 8-2 lead early in the first half set the tone for the evening. This tone was much different from the Marlins' previous games as this contest was the first in which Virginia Wesleyan did not finish within three points of its opposition. Towards the end of the first half, Marlin morale was further lifted with a buzzer beater 3-pointer from Keijon Honore to give his team a 34-24 lead.
Going into the second half, the Marlins once again outshot the Cougars from the floor with a 50% shooting percentage compared Averett's 32%. This resulted in the Marlins outscoring the Cougars 38-30 in this half which guided the team to a comfortable victory.
Virginia Wesleyan shot 46.2% from the floor while the Cougars made 28.1% of their shots. The Marlins were also able to tack on four 3-pointers and outwork Averett on the glass by leading the rebound category 43-34.
Virginia Wesleyan will be returning to Virginia Beach and to ODAC competition this coming saturday as they will be taking on the Washington and Lee Generals (4-1, 1-0 ODAC). The contest will tip-off at 2 p.m.
