Late Macon Goal Hands Field Hockey Loss

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team was narrowly edged by Randolph-Macon, 3-2, Thursday evening under the lights of Birdsong Field. With the result the Marlins fall to 5-12 on the season and move to 2-5 in conference play. Randolph-Macon improves to 8-9 on the year (4-3).

After what seemed like an even first half, the Marlins were able to surround the halftime intermission with a pair of goals. With just under two minutes to play in the second quarter, the home squad earned a penalty corner. Hunter Majewski took it, dishing a short pass to Hayden Thornbrugh. Thornbrugh then whipped a hard pass across the arc which missed a couple sticks before finding Elizabeth Roberto's who deflected it to the back of the net.

Up 1-0 coming out of the break, the Marlins notched another just 2:56 into the third. Another Majewski penalty corner set this one up as Thornbrugh received a pass but shot it this time. Her attempt was warded off but the rebound landed on Roberto's stick and the senior ushered in her second of the night.

Moments later, the Yellow Jackets tied it up with a set piece of their own. Scoring halted until the fourth but Macon found two including one in the final moments to secure the win. The Marlins had an opportunity early in the stanza as a Majewski shot beat the keeper, but a Yellow Jacket defender stopped and cleared the ball at the goal line.

Maura Bridges tallied four saves in the loss, playing all 60 minutes in goal.

Field hockey returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as they travel to Roanoke for their regular season finale.
