VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team claimed a 4-1 victory over Stevenson University Friday afternoon in the team's season opener. The Marlins improve to 1-0 while the Mustangs drop to 0-1.
It was the Marlins who struck first as Julie Fassl was able to slide one by the Stevenson netminder in the first period. She then notched another one before the second period's end to balloon the lead to 2-0 but Stevenson split the difference and the Marlins would go into halftime up just a single score. Karleigh Warren changed that though, scoringin the third stanza increased the lead back to two and with time winding down in regulation, Hunter Majewski capped off the win with a goal to make it 4-1.
Maura Bridges came tied together a solid outing in net, finishing the day with three saves.
Field hockey has a quick turnaround as the team squares off against Wesley College in a home game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
