Field Hockey Falls 1-0 to Roanoke, Claims No. 6 Seed in ODAC Tourney
SALEM, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team lost 1-0 to Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams. The season will continue for the Marlins though as VWC will advance to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament for the first time since 2011.
Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan are the last two teams into the tournament, despite a tie with Randolph-Macon College. The three-way tie for the last two spots went all the way to the fifth step overall and second field hockey-specific tiebreaker, goals allowed in games amongst the tied teams. Roanoke allowed 2 goals to RMC and zero goals to VWC. VWC allowed two goals to RMC and one goal to RC. RMC allowed 1 goal to RC and 3 goals to VWC. By that tiebreaker, RC is the #5 and VWC is the #6.
Roanoke scored the lone goal of the contest at the 15:14 mark when Fiona Dougan collected her third goal of the season on one-timer off an assist from Shelbi Holloman.
Virginia Wesleyan had chances to even the score as the game continued, putting four of its five shots on goal. Roanoke keeper Heather Schauder stopped all four attempts for Roanoke (6-13/2-5).
Skye Swain made four saves for the Marlins.
Roanoke held a 9-5 advantage in shots and 5-4 edge in corners.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-13/2-5) will travel to the No. 3 seed, Bridgewater College, Tuesday for an ODAC quarterfinal matchup at 5 p.m.
