SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team scored seven goals on Wednesday afternoon to defeat Sweet Briar College 7-0 in non-conference action.

The seven goals scored proved to be an offensive explosion, matching the Marlins' season total through eight games coming into the matchup with the Vixens.

Sam Jackson got the offense started with an unassisted scored less than nine minutes into the game. Following an Ashley Parker goal, Jackson scored again for her first career multi-goal game.

More firsts were to follow as Jacklyn Cheely found the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal, making it 4-0 on VWC's first penalty stroke score of the year. Parker rounded out the first half with another tally for her first multi-score effort.

Jenna Serna and Melissa Rideout added scores in the second half. Taylor Marshall had two assists for the Marlins while Asiah Allen and Serna each posted a lone assist.

Katie Torretti had 20 saves for Sweet Briar (0-5) while Eve Mergenthaler added to her already impressive career total with four defensive saves. VWC's Skye Swain made one stop while picking up the shutout.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot Sweet Briar 41-2 while maintaining an 11-1 edge in penalty corners.
