HAMPTON, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Cheer Team found success at its first ever competition on Feb. 3 as the squad competed at the competed at the UA Tour: Virginia Madness Competition in Hampton, Va.
The Marlins took part in the Collegiate Small Co-Ed Elite, where they clinched a top spot, before being crowned Grand Champions of the Collegiate Division.
Each team competing in the competition had to put together a 2:30 performances for the judges to score on technical skill and creativity. The Marlins began their set with a gameday cheer section followed by a musical section where they performed basket tosses, elite stunts and tumbling. To cap off the performance, the squad did orchestrated a pyramid routine. The effort paid off as the team was awarded no deductions.
With the title of Grand Champions, the squad received a bid to attend the U.S. Finals which will take place right here in Virginia Beach during May. The Marlins next competition will be the Battle at the Capital on March 17-18, where they will be able to improve their score from this competition and improve their seed in the U.S. Finals.
