VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team fell, 15-5, to No. 21 Methodist University Wednesday afternoon at Kenneth R. Perry Field. With the loss, the Marlins move to 10-8 on the season while Methodist improves to 19-5.
After holding the Monarchs off the board in the top of the first, the Marlins got some instant offense by way of Austin Obenour. With two strikes on, the junior sent a ball for a ride that cleared the left field fence for a lead off solo shot. Scoring would go cold for the Marlins after that though and Methodist would capitalize by scoring the next 15 runs.
Virginia Wesleyan's other four runs all came in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Cody Ellis and Obenour hit back-to-back doubles to drive in the first run. After Daniel Petro earned a base-on-balls, Jordan McDonough cranked a ball out of the park to score the final three for the home side.
Pitching was done by staff, with seven different Marlins taking the rubber. Doug Avery would get saddled with the loss despite not letting up an earned run.
Baseball will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the squad hits the road for a doubleheader with Ferrum.
