VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team closed out its three-game series with the University of Rochester with a win, downing the Yellow Jackets 3-1 Sunday morning at Kenneth R. Perry Field. With the victory, the Marlins move to 3-4 on the season while Rochester slides to 1-2.
The Marlins got things going early as the squad put up a run in the bottom of the opening frame. Brady Fallon earned a one out single and made it to second after stealing the bag. In the next at-bat, Austin Obenour struck out swinging but the catcher dropped the ball. Hustling his way to first, the Yellow Jacket catcher overthrew the first basemen and Fallon was able to make it home on the error.
It remained a 1-0 game until the bottom of the fifth, when the Marlins piled in a pair of runs. A trio of Rochester errors allowed the first three batters to get on and for Daniel Petro to score. Later in the frame, Obenour would single to score Dylan Gentry who reached on an error earlier. The U of R earned one run back in the eighth, but solid pitching was able to seal up the Marlins' third victory of the year.
Jay Crusemire had a solid day on the bump, issuing two punch outs through the first 7.0 innings and picking up the win. Robert Cook would come in for the final two frames, collecting the save in the process.
Baseball will return to action at 2 p.m. on Tuesday as the team heads to Salisbury University for a battle with the nationally-ranked Sea Gulls.
