FOREST, Va. – Amber Matalus and Kristina Scott of the Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team were both named to All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Teams for their performances during the 2018 season. Matalus took home First Team honors, while Scott earned a spot on the Third Team.
Matalus has had an outstanding season, acting as one of the most proficient hitters in Coach Andrea Hoover-Erbig's lineup. The middle has hit at a clip of .298, which ranks fifth in the conference (with nearly 80 more kills then the top four). Matalus has racked up 243 in her 99 sets played, hitting a rate of 2.45 kills-per-set. The junior also broke her career record for kills in a match with 17 against Shenandoah on Sept. 22. Aside from her offense, Matalus has also been a force at the net and at the service line. Her 72 blocks on the season is ranked fifth in the ODAC while her 20 service aces were third on the team.
Scott capped her senior campaign as one of the top hitters on the Marlin squad. The Mechanicsburg, Pa. native led the team in kills registering a career-high 247 on the year (16th-most in the conference). Scott eclipsed the double-digit mark nine times during the season, including a 13 kill performance against nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University on Sept. 19. Much like her fellow ODAC All-Conference member, the right side hitter aided at the net, registering 51 blocks and eclipsing her previous season blocks record by 14.
Volleyball had a solid year, defeating Roanoke in the Conference Championship Quarterfinals before bowing out to Randolph-Macon in the semis. The team would conclude its year with a 16-12 record, going 9-3 in conference play.
