Volleyball Drops Two at CNU Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team fell twice on Friday at the Christopher Newport University Invitational. The Marlins dropped their match to nationally-ranked CNU, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23) before falling to Averett University 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21). With the results, the Marlins now boast a record of 15-10.

GAME 1: CNU - 3 VWU - 0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23)

The offense struggled to get going against 20th-ranked CNU, only recording 24 kills in the match. Leading the way were Amber Matalus and Kristina Scott who each accumulated five.

Splitting setting duties were Meghan Wood and Katie Costin who collected 11 and 10 assists, respectively.

Despite the loss, Sydney Collins and Lauren Topper demonstrated solid defense at the net as they combined for seven block assists.

GAME 2: AVERETT - 3 VWU - 1 (25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21)

This game was much closer as each set was played within four points. The Cougars narrowly edged the Marlins in set one but a Scott kill and an Averett service error handed VWU the win in set two. Much like the first two sets, the third set was neck-and-neck with the Marlins just barely failing on their one set point.

The offense was spearheaded by the outside attack in this one as Doneisha Hall racked up 14 kills while fellow outside hitter Elizabeth Britton registered 11.

Wood would take the brunt of the setting duties as she came away with 24. Costin also pitched in though, collecting 16 herself.

In the back row, Alyssa Taylor picked up a 10 digs to go along 12 from the match before (both team-highs).

Volleyball will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the squad takes on another nationally-ranked team in Berry University.
