VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2018 season. The squad will compete in 30 matches, with 10 of them to be played at their own Donald M. Forsyth Gymnasium inside the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
The Marlins get right down to business with an eight team home tournament to kick off the season. Virginia Wesleyan will play four games in the tourney, beginning with a match against McMurry University on August 31st. Later that day, the team will square off against Widener University. The following day the Marlins will take on both Penn State-Berks and St. Mary's College (MD).
VWU will then hit the road for a single match with the University of Mary Washington on Sept 5 before heading to Marymount University for a tri-match on Sept 8. At the Tri-match, the squad will go to battle against Wheaton College before taking on host Marymount.
On Sept. 11, the Marlins will take part in their first ODAC match as they host Eastern Mennonite for an evening match. Then its back to the road as they go to Danville, Va. for the Averett University Tournament. There, Virginia Wesleyan will face the host Cougars in the first match on Sept. 14 and then take on Brevard College the same day. On day two of the tournament, the team will compete against Huntingdon College and Salem College.
A bit of a home stint is next in play for the Marlins, beginning with a non-conference bout against nearby Christopher Newport University on Sept. 19. The team then takes on Shenandoah in its second conference match of the year on Sept.22. The home stretch concludes with a match against Southern Virginia on Sept. 25.
The Marlins find themselves in Maryland on Sept. 26 for a midweek tilt with Salisbury College before heading across Virginia for an ODAC tri-match at Emory & Henry. There, the squad will take on both Emory & Henry and Guilford on Sept. 29.
To open up October, the Marlins will travel to Randolph-Macon for a match on the 3rd. They then come back home to face ODAC-foe Randolph on the 5th. Over Oct. 10, 12 and 13 the team will be on the road with matches against Bridgewater, Ferrum and Roanoke, respectively. The team then hosts Lynchburg on Oct. 17 in the final regular season home contest.
From there everything is on the road, beginning with a tri-match with Washington and Lee and Hollins in Lexington, Va. on Oct. 20. The Marlins will then head down one state to take on N.C. Wesleyan on Oct. 23. The team's final matches will be part of the Christopher Newport Tournament, commencing on Oct. 26 with a pair of matches against the host Captains and Averett. The regular season finale will be a tilt against Berry College the following day.
