Volleyball Sweeps Shenandoah in Three Sets

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team swept Shenandoah University in three sets, 25-11, 25-18, 25-21, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday.

The Marlin defense kept Shenandoah at bay during the match, holding the Hornets to eight kills or less in each set. Shenandoah did not hit better than .036 in any one set.

Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an early 9-3 lead behind three kills from Kristina Scott and two by Amber Matalus.

Shenandoah cut the lead to four points, 10-6, but trailed by double figures for most of the first set. VWU led 16-9 when the final Marlin run occurred. The hosts closed on a 9-2 run to claim the first set in quick fashion.

Shenandoah led 5-1 early in the second game, but the Marlins rallied for a 7-1 run to pull ahead by an 8-6 margin. The Marlins received three service aces in the run, two out of the hand of Doneisha Hall. Shenandoah was never able to regain the lead in the second as the Marlins used the momentum from the early run to set up a chance for the sweep.

SU ran out to a quick 8-4 start in the third set, forcing the Marlins to take a timeout. VWU responded with a scoring spurt of its own, jumping out to a 11-10 lead. The squads continued to go back and forth with SU leading 15-14 on a Marlin attack error. VWU scored the next four points to go up 19-15, a lead that the Hornets would not overcome.

Hall led the Marlins with 10 kills as Elizabeth Britton and Matalus had eight each. Meghan Wood paced the squad with 18 assists as Allison Mackley distributed 23 digs.

Nicole Shannon had 22 digs for Shenandoah (5-11/0-5).

Virginia Wesleyan (9-6/4-1) travels to Eastern Mennonite University (5-11/2-4) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC start.
