Volleyball Opens ODAC Play with Four Set Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Tuesday night by handing Bridgewater College its first loss of the season.

The Marlins captured the victory in four sets by a score of 26-24, 25-13, 22-25, 25-23.

The first set looked like it could predict the match as the two strong ODAC squads battled point for point. The Marlins ultimately came away with the set win, using that momentum to an easy second set win, 25-13.

The Marlins led by as much as 12 in the second set when back-to-back kills by Elizabeth Britton made the score 21-9. Another kill by Britton, blocks from Amber Matalus and Lauren Topper, and several Bridgewater errors brought VWU within one set of an ODAC-opening win.

Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the third set, but Bridgewater pieced together a string of six-straight points to go up 8-5. The Eagles would maintain the lead the remainder of the set.

The Marlins jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 15-9 in the fourth set before the Eagles battled back. Looking to force a fifth set and trailing 15-9, Bridgewater went on a 12-1 run to take a commanding 21-16 lead.

VWU charged back, highlighted by three Doneisha Hall kills to regain a 24-21 lead. Bridgewater scored the next two to cut the deficit to 24-23, but a Kristina Scott kill preserved the win for the Marlins.

Carleigh Studtmann led Bridgewater (8-1/0-1) with 11 kills while Jenna Hamra added 17 kills to go with 33 digs from Macon Frey.

Britton led the Marlins with a career-high 13 kills. Emilee Pierson contributed 22 assists while Allison Mackley registered 24 digs.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-4/1-0) travels to Randolph College (3-6/0-0) Saturday for another ODAC match scheduled for 7 p.m.
