Marlins Battle in Day Two of Volleyball Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team battled through two matches on Saturday afternoon, falling to Wartburg College in three sets before dropping a tough battle to FDU-Florham in four.

Wartburg (4-0) finished the tournament undefeated despite a tough fight from the Marlins. The Knights took the first set 25-15, but VWC fought deep into the final two games, falling 28-26 and 25-22.

Allison Mackley led the Marlins with eight kills to go along with 15 digs. Tiffany Barrett led the Marlins with 19 digs to go along with five kills, while Emilee Pierson posted 17 digs and 13 assists to go with 18 digs from Marin Crowder.

Kalyn Ertz was a force up front for Wartburg with 15 kills in the match against just three errors for a .324 hitting percentage as Emma Harmeyer dished out 37 assists.

VWC's second game of the day could have gone either way as the Marlins fell 26-24, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21 to FDU-Florham.

The Marlins fought through each of the first two games, showing their perseverance to take the third game and force a fourth. VWC held a 21-20 edge in the final set after kills from Maddy McMurry and Mackley put the Marlins back in front. The FDU-Florham scored the final five points on a Kate Quinlan kill and several assists to capture the win.

Barrett posted 19 kills and 13 digs while Crowder led all Marlins with 33 digs. Kirstin Sessoms contributed 24 assists as Pierson added 23.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-3) travels to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 7 p.m. non-conference start on Wednesday.
