Women's Tennis Edged in Road Battle with Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Women's Tennis Team ventured westward to Lynchburg, VA for an ODAC showdown with the Randolph College Wildcats. Despite a hard fought match, the Marlins ultimately fell short of victory as they lost 5-4.

The action began with doubles where Christine Zalameda and Lyric Hinton excelled at the number 2 position with an 8-0 hour win over Randolph's Lauren Appel and Sarah Mueller. The Wildcats however, quickly leveled the match score at 1-1 thanks to an 8-4 win from Ashley Schmitz and Keyu Jin over Virginia Wesleyan's Katie Staman and Audrey Bally at number 1 doubles. The Marlins then reclaimed the lead with an 8-4 win from Taylor Witherspoon and Aubree Johnson at number 3 doubles.

With a 2-1 lead at the start of singles play, the Marlins came out hungry and drew first blood thanks to Katie Staman and Taylor Witherspoon taking the first sets at numbers 3 and 4 singles respectively. Despite the initial opening firepower from the Marlins, Randolph quickly tied up the contest at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-1 win from Ashley Schmitz over Audrey Bally. Katie Staman quickly gave the lead back to the Marlins with a 6-1, 6-3 win at number 3 singles. Despite a valiant effort, Christine Zalameda fell to Randolph's Keyu Jin 6-4, 6-2 at number 1 singles.

With the overall match score tied at 3-3, the Marlins needed two of the three remaining courts to secure a team win. The Wildcats however, notched these two victories first as Sarah Mueller defeated Lyric Hinton 6-2, 6-0 at number 5 singles and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo bested Aubree Johnson 6-1, 6-2 at number 6 singles.

While the match had already been clinched, Taylor Witherspoon earned a 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 win over Randolph's Lauren Appel to finalize the score at 5-4.

With the loss, the Marlins fall to 3-4 in ODAC play and 7-6 overall.

The Marlins will be on the road again next weekend, this time heading to Winchester, VA to take on the Shenandoah Hornets. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the Lowery Tennis Courts.
