Hilton Head, SC - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team kicked off their annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, SC with a 6-1 decision against Allegheny College on Sunday afternoon at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
Both team entered the trip with a 3-2 record on the early season. The Marlins came out hot by sweeping all three doubles positions. Striking first for the Marlins was the #3 team of Aubree Johnson (Norfolk, VA) and Taylor Witherspoon (Fairfax, VA), clinching the Marlin's first point 8-1. At #1 doubles, senior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and sophomore Audrey Bally (Nice, France) continued their strong play by earning an 8-3 win, giving them a 4-1 record at #1 so far this season. With the Marlins up 2-0 the #2 team of freshman Christine Zalameda (Poquoson, VA) and junior Lyric Hinton (Petersburg, VA) outlasted Allegheny's #2 team 8-5 giving VWU a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Playing on four courts the Marlins took all four first sets putting them in a strong position to take five points. The Marlin's 4th point came behind a 6-0, 6-2 win from Katie Staman at #2. Shortly thereafter Audrey Bally out battled her opponent at #3 singles taking the match 6-3, 6-3. With the Marlins up 4-0, junior transfer Lyric Hinton pulled out her 6-4, 6-3 decision at #4 to clinch the win for the Marlins. At #1 singles Christine Zalameda came up just short when she dropped a tight 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 battle. Very soon after the Marlins clinched rained moved in and suspended the remaining matches which will not be made up.
With the win the Marlins improve to 4-2 on the season. Up next for the Marlins is a double header on Monday March 18th. At 8:30 am they will take on the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, then at 3 pm the Marlins will square off against NAIA's St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Both matches will be played at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
