Virginia Beach, VA - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team earned their first victory on the young season with a 6-3 decision against visiting Meredith College on Saturday morning at the Everett Tennis Center.
The Marlins went up 2-0 in doubles behind a pair of 8-6 decisions at 1 and 2 doubles. Meredith claimed number three doubles 8-2.
In singles, Marlin standout freshman Christine Zalameda (Poquoson, VA) continued her solid play by winning 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles. At 2 singles, sophomore Audrey Bally (Nice, France) defeated freshman Aly Henneberry 6-3, 6-4. At 3, senior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) took out Emily Wilkinson 6-2, 6-2. Also claiming a singles point for the Marlins was Taylor Witherspoon with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alexander Cheney.
With the win the Marlins move to 1-1 on young season. The women hit the road next weekend for three ODAC matches. On Saturday the will play at Washington and Lee; match time is set for 2 PM. On Sunday they will head to Hollins University to take on host Hollins at 9:30 AM before facing off against ODAC newcomer Ferrum at 1 PM.
