Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Women's Tennis team competed in their first match of the season against Emory and Henry this afternoon in Virginia Beach at the Everett Tennis Center. Despite a hard fought battle, the Marlins were narrowly edged by only one match.
In doubles action, Lyric Hinton and Christine Zalameda at number two were first to put the Marlins on the scoreboard as they earned an impressive 8-3 victory. Audrey Bally and Katie Staman won 8-2 at number one soon after to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. At number three, Aubree Johnson and Taylor Witherspoon fell 8-5.
With the Marlins leading 2-1 going into singles, Christine Zalameda and Audrey dominated at one and two singles respectively. Zalameda won 6-1, 6-2 and Bally won 6-0, 6-2.
Emory and Henry then earned two singles wins at the number four and six positions to cut the Marlin lead from 4-1 to 4-3. These matches were followed by a three set battle at the number 3 position where Katie Staman fought valiantly in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 loss. Emory and Henry clinched the match 5-4 shortly after with a 7-5, 6-2 win at number 5 singles.
The Marlins will be looking to bounce back tomorrow against the Meredith College Avenging Angels. First serve is scheduled for 10:30 AM.
