Women's Tennis improve to 2-1 with 8-1 win over Meredith College

RALEUGH, N.C. - THe Virginia Welseyan University women's tennis found success on the road against Meredith college on Friday.  First off the court for the Marlins was the 3 doubles team of Taylor Witherspoon and Kristina Sabelstrom taking a 8-2 win over Meredith. Soon after the marlins 2 doubles duo of Katie Staman and Courtney Simmons took down the Angels 9-7. After a long battle at number 1 doubles Meredith College was able to fend off multiple match points against them to  come back and put their team on the board with a 9-8(7-5) victory over VWU's number 1 team of Audrey Bally and Makayla Velic.  
 
After doubles the marlins carried a 2-1 lead into singles play just needing 3 singles victories to clinch the match.  First off the court was Bally after making quick work of her opponent 6-2 6-0. VWU kept the momentum going and grabbed two more singles victories shortly after starting with Sabelstrom's 6-3 7-5 straight set victory over her opponent bringing the match score to 4-1 putting the marlins just one match away from clinching the W.  Velic went ahead and put the match away for VWU with a 7-6 6-2 won over Meredith College.  Adding on to the win column for the marlins after clinching was Staman at #3 singles with a three set marathon taking it 7-5 4-6 6-1. Continuing the three set trend freshman Courtney Simmons takes a 7-6 4-6 6-4 W over her Meredith College foe fighting back from a 1-4 deficit in the third set. Cheely finished with a three set win as well winning 6-4 4-6 6-3 concluding singles play and finishing the match for a 8-1 victory to put it into the books.
 
The womens tennis team will be back in action March 10th for a big time double header against Penn St. Abington at 10 am at the Everett Tennis Center and then a quick turn around for an ODAC matchup against Guilford College at 2pm held at the Everett tennis center.
