BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team took down top-seeded Bridgewater, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship semifinal. With the win, the Marlins move to 11-3-4 on the year and will wait to see whether they take on #2 Lynchburg or #3 Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Championship Final at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Marlins held the edge nearly the entire game, registering nine shots on goal to the Eagles one. The difference maker came late though, courtesy of Alex Davidson in the 80th minute. The play began on a Bridgewater goal kick which Alexandra Fitz headed back deep into the Marlins offensive third. The Bridgewater defense played it safe, knocking it out of play for a VWU throw in. Brooke Adamchak came forward to take the throw, tossing a big ball towards the near post. The ball was gathered by Davidson, who was able to turn, take two steps and fire a shot that beat the keeper to the far post. That would be all that was needed as the Marlins parked the bus for the final 10 minutes, sealing the victory.
Defensively, the backline of Ann Marie Moffett, Emily Taylor and Shae Geary did well to nullify any real Eagle chances. Tristen Roberts made well on the one opportunity Bridgewater put on net, picking up her sixth shut out of the season.
