Marlins Shut Out Sweet Briar 10-0

AMHERST, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team made quick work of Sweet Briar College, defeating the Vixens 10-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday.

The total ties for the seventh-most goals scored in a game by the Marlins in program history. It is the first multi-goal match for VWU since October 26 of last year when the Marlins scored 14 goals against Sweet Briar.

The Marlins scored their first goal at 7:31 when Alex Davidson took a shot that was deflected back out to Ryan McCurry for the score. Davidson then scored on a Zoe Traficante assist at 10:51 to make it 2-0. The sophomore added her second goal in the 18th minute to make it 3-0.

Sarah Heinbaugh finished off the scoring in the first half when she finished off a beautifully played ball from Teah Lorenzi at 27:33.

The Marlins scored six goals in the second half as five different players found the back of the net. Marli Hayward started the second-half scoring in the 54th minute when she beat her defender to make it 5-0 with a great ball played into the right-upper 90.

Nicole Stottlemyer scored a pair of goals in the final half, the first two of her collegiate career, as Lorenzi, Mary Alexis Jackson, and Alexandra Fitz also beat the Sweet Briar keeper for scores. Heinbaugh assisted on one score in the second half while Allie Angell posted a pair of assists.

The Marlins outshot Sweet Briar 56-0 while holding an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.

Caroline Thomas made 12 saves for Sweet Briar (1-9/0-5) while Sam Holston added another 10. Alicia Zamora, Tristen Roberts, and Rachel Colt all saw time in net for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-5-1/4-1) travels to Shenandoah University (7-6/2-3) Saturday for a noon ODAC start.
