Pedicone Score Carries Marlins to 1-0 Victory

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Freshman Anna Pedicone scored her fourth goal of the season in the 13th minute as the Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team downed Salisbury University 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The match started with both teams attempting to control the ball in the midfield. The first shot did not occur until the 10:08 mark when Marli Hayward sailed a shot just over the crossbar. The Marlins continued to keep the pressure on, scoring the lone goal in the 13th minute. Alex Davidson corralled a loose ball in the Salisbury half of the field, sending a ball long down the right sideline. Pedicone ran it down, ripping a shot from the right side of the box that snuck past ope Knussman for the 1-0 advantage.

Knussman turned the Marlins away on two additional chances in the first half to keep the match within reach for her Sea Gulls. Salisbury had a chance to tie the contest at 19:21 when Julianna Boller got free for a shot, but Alicia Zamora made a good stop for the Marlins to preserve the shutout.

The second half was all Virginia Wesleyan as the Marlin offense came out full of energy, getting behind a tired Sea Gull back line on multiple occasions. Davidson and Hayward found their way through the defense twice, but were turned away by Knussman. The Sea Gull keeper had to leave the box multiple times to take on Marlin attackers one-on-one. She registered seven saves in the second half, while Kayla Homeyer stopped the other attempt by kicking away a ball on the back line.

Zamora matched Knussman whenever the ball got past the vaunted Marlin defense, making an impressive stop on a shot at 65:44. She turned away another shot by Boller with under two minutes to play to secure the win for the Marlins.

VWU outshot Salisbury (1-5) by a 20-7 margin while the Sea Gulls led 3-2 in corner kicks.

Knussman made nine saves for SU as Zamora stopped three for her first career shutout.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-3-1) hosts Meredith College (3-1) Saturday at 2 p.m. for another non-conference match.
