VWU Battles to Finish in 2-1 Loss to No. 5 Trinity (TX)
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team battled to the finish with No. 5 Trinity (TX), earning a corner kick and putting a shot on goal in the final minute before ultimately falling 2-1 on Saturday night.
Trinity started the scoring at the 25:02 mark when Julia Kelly found Julia Camp who finished off a loose ball in the box.
Colleen Markey added to the Tiger lead when she picked up a loose ball, curling it into the box for the 2-0 advantage at the 28:53 mark.
The Marlin defense locked down the remainder of the match, keeping Trinity off the board despite the Tigers having several chances. Taylor Chapman finished with two saves in the game as the defense looked to thwart Trinity and steal an upset win.
VWU got close to that upset at in the 37th minute when Alex Davidson scored on a free kick from 35 yards out. The Marlins continued to challenge Trinity, forcing Kalli Douma to make four saves on the evening, including three in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan earned a corner in the 89th minute with a chance to knot the score. Davidson ripped the corner into the box, but Brooke Adamchak's header was blocked. Marli Hayward corralled the rebound, taking another shot with 54 seconds to play but Douma made the stop to preserve the victory.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) hosts Christopher Newport University (2-0) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for a non-conference match.
