Highlanders, Weather Hold off Women's Soccer 3-1
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The scoring started early, but Saturday's match would last longer than expected as a weather delay late in the second half forced a stoppage of play. Houghton College survived a second-half Marlin goal, and the weather, to win 3-1.
Houghton found the first opportunity to score three and a half minutes into the contest when Sarah Gabriele attempted a corner kick for the Highlanders. Her kick sailed into the box where it was headed home by Bailey Shattell to force the Marlins to play from behind.
Abby Schmidt scored 10 minutes into the second half on an assist by Shattell to put Houghton up 2-0 before VWC responded.
Houghton pulled away against just two minutes later when Nikki Garns and Schmidt found Brielle Kwarta for the 3-1 final margin.
Annie Hartman had a pair of shots on goal that were both saved by Shawna Sprout just before the rain delay started. Following the one hour, 20 minute delay at the 78:21 mark neither team managed a look at the goal.
Sprout made six saves for Houghton (3-2) as Alexis Wheeler made three stops for the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan held a 12-10 advantage in shots while the Highlanders attempted one more corner kick (4-3).
Virginia Wesleyan (1-4) will conclude play in the Captains Classic with a 1 p.m. start against Methodist University on Sunday.
