Marlins Take Finale of Classic, Down Carthage 2-1
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team pushed the intensity early, taking shot after shot against Carthage College to win 2-1 in the finale of the Atlantic Orthopedic Specialists Classic.
Katie Roberts got the offense started just over 27 minutes into the match off a deflection in front of the goalkeeper. The Marlins took 10 shots in the first half, six of which came on goal as Kate Perry made five saves to keep the Carthage deficit to one goal.
The Marlins continued to attack the Lady Red defense in the final 45 minutes, ripping 16 more shots, eight on goal. Perry made seven saves out of that onslaught but the one ball she could not stop proved to be the difference as Abigail Nickle finished off a rebound from her own header.
Carthage's Kara Aittama scored off a corner kick by Madeline Peno at 86:54 but the Marlins possessed the ball enough the rest of the way to keep the lead.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Carthage (0-2) 26-7 while maintaining a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Perry ended with 12 saves for Carthage while Alexis Wheeler made one stop for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-2) hosts Salisbury University Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a non-conference showdown.
