GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball picked up its first win of the 2018-19 season, downing Greensboro College, 79-73, in the second game of the Daly 7 Classic hosted by Guilford on Saturday. With the win, the Marlins improve to 1-3 on the year while serving the Pride its first loss (3-1).
After trailing in the first quarter, 17-11, the Marlins flipped the script as Jayla Harris' nine points and Amanda Gerni's seven helped the team earn a 30-29 lead going into the halftime intermission. The second half stayed close all the way throughout but a 13-2 run to start the fourth quarter helped propel the squad to victory.
The program's third-leading scorer came alive during the game, registering a team-high 28 points. Amanda Gerni also turned in a solid performance as well, churning out 19 points including nine points from beyond the arc. Also chipping on the day were newcomer Sabrina Jones (13) and Reagan Holmes (10).
Gerni found success underneath the basket as well, finishing just one board shy of a double-double. She would receive All-Tournament Team honors at the conclusion of the Classic.
Defensively, the Marlins helped cause 21 Pride turnovers, including three steals from both Holmes and Camahni Kelly.
Women's basketball returns to action at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday as the team hosts North Carolina Wesleyan College in the Marlins' home opener.
