SALEM, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's indoor track and field team took fourth at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships on Sunday at the Cregger Center. The team finished the meet with 58.5 total points.
It didn't take long for the Marlins to get their first ODAC Champion of the day as Coby Cockrell dominated the throws. The freshman took first in the weight throw, hurling for a mark of 49-2.25. Later in the day he would snatch another first place finish as his toss of 47-11.25 in the shot put not only topped the field but also set the new VWU record. Two other Marlins earned points in the shotput as well as Abel Owusu and CJ Govan both threw exactly 42-11.00 for another five team points.
It was the short track that helped rack up another large amount of team points on the day. Curtis Dudley clocked a 7.09 in the 60m prelims and then bettered that time by .10 in the finals. His efforts would earn him third place overall. He'd pick up one more point for the squad in the 200m dash as he crossed the finish line in 23.16.
In the 60m hurdles, a pair of Marlins came away with points for the team. Landry Moffo ran an 8.48 in the prelims to earn a ticket to the finals, while Michael Gatling joined him with a time of 8.71. The twosome would end up finishing second and eighth as Moffo timed an 8.42 and Gatling a 9.06. Earlier, Gatling earned the team two points in the triple jump with a leap of 13.14m.
The squad also picked up 11 points in a couple relays. Mike Tres, Gavin Steel, Eric Fisher and Skyler Latucca teamed up to take third in the 4000m distance medley relay with a time of 10:51.18. Then in the meet's final event, the 4x400m relay, Gatling, Steel, Will Peyton and Fisher combined to take fourth with a time of 3:34.63.
