Cockrell Earns ODAC Recognition After Stellar Weekend

FOREST, Va. – Coby Cockrell of the Virginia Wesleyan University men's indoor track and field team has been named the Male Field Athlete of the Week by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

Cockrell had an excellent outing in the throws this weekend, helping his team nab a first place finish at the Collegeville Classic hosted by Ursinus College. The freshman got things going in the weight throw as he set a mark of 14.27m on Friday. The distance was not only the farthest distance by a collegiate athlete but it also broke the Virginia Wesleyan University record (which was previously set by Cockrell this year). The Gretna, Va. native wasn't finished there though as he excelled in the shot put as well. Cockrell placed fifth out of 33 competitors with a toss of 13.88m, putting him less than a foot away from the VWU record.

Cockrell will be joined by his Marlin teammates again on Friday as the team heads to Christopher Newport University for the two-day Captain's Invite.
