VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – When you think of the most prolific athletes to ever dawn a Marlin uniform, you don't have to travel back far in time. In fact, you can probably stop just one year ago. A 2018 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan University, Marissa Coombs dazzled during her four years, dominating in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Now, the Newton, N.J. native has her sights set on her post collegiate career and it involves what she did best here: running.
Back in her home state of New Jersey, Coombs has found a new team to help push her to new heights. She recently joined with the Garden State Track Club, a semi-professional run club that competes in the NY/NJ metropolis area. A large club, Coombs has aligned herself in the "Emerging Elites" subgroup, which contains runners recently delving into professional running. There, she will be sponsored by New Balance and will receive other benefits received for her semi-pro status.
"I am just glad to be running competitively again" announced Coombs, who recently took a month long trip to travel Europe. "Virginia Wesleyan opened up this opportunity for me and I am grateful that my time and training [at VWU] has allowed me to further my running career".
Coombs was an electric runner in her time at Virginia Wesleyan University, setting multiple Virginia Wesleyan records along the way. She was four time All-American (3x Indoor, 1x outdoor) and was the first female to earn a spot at the Division III NCAA National Meet in cross country after she placed first in the Old Dominion Athletic Championships in 2017.
While competing for the Garden State Track Club, Coombs will run her events from college including the 800m, 3000m, the mile and also the distance medley relay.
