NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor seasons up in impressive fashion as the two sides competed in the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Sunday.
It was a solid day for the Marlin newcomers as top times were set on both the men's and women's sides. Jaylyn Lane performed well in the jump pits, taking second in the long jump with a leap of 5.24-meters before claiming second in the triple jump with a measure of 11.02m. Those jumps are currently the top marks in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). On the men's side, freshman Landry Moffo took second in the 60-meter hurdle prelims before nabbing second in the finals with a time of 8.55. His classmate, Coby Cockrell, found success in the weight throw, tossing the weight 46'5" for a fifth place finish. Cockrell and Moffo's results also set new school records.
Continuing with the freshman was Eamon Cooney, who set the ODAC's top time, and placed first among 31 runners, in the 400-meter dash as he crossed the finish line with a time of 51.01.
The newcomers were not the only Marlins performing well though as Curtis Dudley had a terrific day on the track. The junior beat out numerous Division I runners in the 60-meter dash, taking first overall with a time of 6.97 (the only sub-seven second time in the field). Senior Kwonsha Washington also saw some positive action on the track as her time of 1:02.96 in the 400m race currently places her in third among all ODAC runners.
Track and field will return to action on Jan. 19 as the team heads to the Collegeville Classic hosted by Ursinus College.
