NEW ORLEAN, La. – Three members of the Virginia Wesleyan University track and field teams have been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-South/Southeast Region Teams. On the women's side, both Marissa Coombs and Michelle Yates earned the honor while Jordan Ard was selected from the men's side.
Coombs capped off her terrific career with another trip to the NCAA Division III Championships. The senior ran the sixth fastest 1500-meter in DIII, clocking a 4:29.70 at the George Mason Spring Invite. Coombs also turned out another impressive performance at the ODAC Championships, taking first in the 1500m and second in the 800m. She was a member of the first-place winning 4x400m relay team as well.
Yates mimicked her classmate's ways, registering some of her top career marks in her final year as a Marlin. The senior demolished her own school record in the hammer throw, setting a mark of 42.65 in her final meet. On the flipside, in the season opener, she also broke her own school record in the shot put, tossing it a distance of 12.29m. At ODACs, Yates found the podium in multiple throws, taking second in the shot put, third in the hammer and seventh in the discus.
Just in his first year at Virginia Wesleyan, Ard has already proven he's at the top of his events. The freshman has been stellar in the 100m, taking first overall in the ODAC Championship with a time of 10.71. He has seen success in the 200m as well, setting the program's top time of the season (21.72). Ard has been just as good in the relays, helping the squad take home first in the 4x100 at ODACs with a time of 42.06.
