LA CROSSE, Wisc. – Marissa Coombs of the Virginia Wesleyan University women's track and field team will be making her way back to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship which will be held in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Coombs will be competing in the 1500 meter race, which she has dominated over the past few years. Prelims for the event will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday with the finals going off at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday.
Ranked sixth in the nation going into the NCAA Championship, the senior notched her fastest mark during the George Mason Spring Invitational on April 14, clocking in with a time of 4:29.49. There, she placed second in a field of 55 runners, outpacing numerous Division I competitors. Coombs has already found plenty of success in this race, as she clinched first overall at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships this Spring.
Coombs is now a veteran of the national stage, taking part in her eighth national championship event and her sixth on the track. Last season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Newton, N.J. native shaved over six seconds off her preliminary time to clinch second in the 1500m with a time of 4:25.29.
