White completes sweep of 400 titles in ODAC track and field championships

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Trey White completed a sweep on Saturday.

The Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore from Spotsylvania (Courtland) raced to a Marlin record time of 49.53 in the 400 meter dash at the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) outdoor championship at Bridgewater College to claim the event championship.  The outdoor title complements his ODAC indoor championship in the same event in March in Landover, Md.

White, who broke VWC's previous record of 50.11 set by Dan Elmore (Warrenton/Fauquier) in 2014, was one of three Marlins to compete in the event.  Sophomore Aires Reyes (Alexandria/ St. Stephens and St. Agnes)placed sixth in the same race in a tme of 50.28 and Elmore placed seventh (50.44).

White's championship highlighted competition for the Marlin teams, who produced several program records in the two-day event.  Junior Ed Chase (Falls Church/J.E.B. Stuart)helped get things done for the VWC men, placing second in the high jump by breaking his own Marlin record with a height of 6 feet, 3.25 inches.

Rookie Michelle Yates (Berryville/Clarke County) recorded a runner-up finish for the Marlin women in the shot put with a VWC record toss of 37-10.  She smashed her own previous record of 35-10.5 set earlier this season.  VWC's women also claimed a runner-up finish in the javelin where sophomore Nikki Burns (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) covered a distance of 120-11.

Rookie Marissa Coombs (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional)set a program record in the 800, posting a time of 2:19.96 to placed fourth.  Her effort broke her previous record of 2:20.14.  Coombs also emerged with a third place showing in the 1500 with a time of 4:51.90. 

Sophomore Tiffany Lennon (Carrollton/Smithfield)rewrote her own record in the 200 meter dahs with a time of 25.69 in the prelims.  She finished seventh in the finals with a time of 26.85. Lennon and Coombs teams with Shakiella Daniel (Suffolk/Lakeland) andTiana Hughes (Stafford/Brooke Point)to produce a VWC record in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:58.13, which also broke the existing Bridgewater facility record of 4:01.13.

The Marlins placed second in the 4x400 and also took the runner-up spot in the 4x100 with a time of 49.01. Shakira Mills (Hampton/Bethel), Lennon, Hughes, and Daniel competed in the later event for VWC.

VWC's men also fared well in relays, placing second in the 4x400 and third in the 4x100.  Junior Marquis Sivels (Moyock, N.C./Norfolk Christian), Reyes, White, and Elmore raced to a time of 3:21.27 in the 4x4.  Senor Ethan Fowlkes (Quinton/New Kent), rookieJermell Chester (Newport News/Heritage), Reyes, and Elmore clocked a time of 43.52 in the 4x1.

Senior Liz Wade (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) clocked a time of 19:14 to place third in the 5,000 meter run. Daniel finished third in the 400 with a time of 58.22 and Hughes placed fifth (1:00.03).
