WINCHESTER, Va. - A record that has eluded Virginia Wesleyan College sprinters for the past five years met its match on Sunday.
Sophomore Trey White (Spotsylvania/Courtland)raced to a first place finish in the 400 meter run at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) indoor track and field championship meet, clocking a VWC-record time of 50.27. That run wiped out the Marlins' previous record of 50.95 set by Jason Taylor in 2009.
White also utilized his speed in relay competition to help Virginia Wesleyan to the ODAC championship in the 4x400. He teamed up with Aires Reyes (Alexandria/St. Stephens-St. Agnes), Marquis Sivels (Moyock, N.C./Norfolk Chrisian), and Dan Elmore (Warrenton/Fauquier) to race to a final time of 3:28.02.
Those championship finishes highlighted a strong day of competition for the Marlin teams, which both placed fifth in the overall competition. The men scored 41 points and the women tallied 59, their highest total ever in the ODAC championship meet.
Rookie Rolonda Taylor (Norfolk/Norview)turned in one of the top efforts for the VWC women, tying the program record in the high jump. She cleared the bar at 5-feet, 3-inches, matching the height set by Courtney Mebane in 2014. Taylor took the runner-up spot in the competition.
VWC's women also took a runner-up spot, and set a program record, in the distance medley relay. Emily Latimer (Moyock, N.C./Currituck), Tiana Hughes (Stafford/Brooke Point), Kyla Edwards-Henderson (Chester/Matoaca), and Marissa Coombs (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional)emerged as one of three units to break the existing meeting record of 12:58.54 set by Washington and Lee Univesity in 2013. The Marlins covered the race in a time of 12:38.23, wiping out the previous VWC record of 13:07.53 set in 2013.
Junior Shakiella Daniel (Suffolk/Lakeland) provided the VWC women with a school record inthe 400, finishing third overall in the race. She clocked a time of 59.30, improving the previous standard of 1:00.84 that she set in 2012.
Coombs was also part of the Marlins' 4x400 relay that finished as the runner-up in a time of 4:05.02. Tiffany Lennon (Carrollton/Smithfield), Daniel, and Hughes all competed in the event for VWC.
RookieMichelle Yates (Berryville/Clarke County) came through for a runner-up finish in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 9.75 inches and senior Liz Wade (Chesapeake/Great Bridge) took the No. 2 finish in the 5K with a time of 18:58.12, only one of two women to break 19:00.
