VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University softball coaching staff has been named the Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year for their efforts over the 2018 season. Headed by Brandon Elliott, the staff consisting of Jim Quinn, Jenna Wilson, Chris Smith and Bobby Wills helped steer the softball team towards one of the best seasons in NCAA history.
In his 11th year at the helm, Brandon Elliott did what few other coaches can say they have accomplished and that is to win back-to-back National titles. Only done four times in Division III history, Elliott guided his team back to Oklahoma City for the NCAA Championships and left with hardware in hand.
Taking home Coaching staff of the Year honors last season, the Marlin softball program welcomed a new cast of coaches onto their staff for the 2018 campaign. While Head Coach Brandon Elliott and Director of Softball Operations Coach Jim Quinn remained the same, the Marlins brought in former Division I player Jenna Wilson to help coach infield (and first base) as well as Chris Smith to instruct the infield and Bobby Wills to work with the pitchers.
Despite the new faces, the program seemed stronger than ever as they set the new Division III record for wins in a season with 55. The schedule boasted games against 20 ranked opponents, but through solid leadership, the squad came out victorious in all but two of them. To go along with the impressive record, Virginia Wesleyan would be ranked the top team in Division III for the entirety of the season and would also claim the title of ODAC regular season champs as well as ODAC Championship honors.
