Marlins Dominate ODAC Major Awards

FOREST, Va. – The No. 1 ranked Virginia Wesleyan College softball team dominated the major Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) awards as the All-ODAC softball teams were announced on Tuesday.

Junior Cassetty Howerin was named ODAC Player of the Year while freshman Hanna Hull earned ODAC Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year accolades. Brandon Elliott was recognized as ODAC Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four years, and fifth overall.

Emory & Henry shortstop Danielle Loving was named the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete.

The Marlins saw a large contingent on the all-conference squads as well as Hull, Howerin, Jessica Lindsay, and Kaylah Duplain leading the way on the All-ODAC First Team. Courtney Wright and Kiersten Richardson were both named Third Team All-ODAC.

Howerin led the ODAC with 11 home runs and 46 RBI. Her .458 batting average was second in the league. She sits near the top of the Virginia Wesleyan record books in multiple categories, currently leading in career batting average (.466) and RBI (149). She sits second in the VWC record books in career home runs with 26.

Howerin is the seventh Marlin to earn ODAC Player of the Year, and fifth in the last six years.

Hull had arguably the most impressive campaign in school history in her first season in the circle. She leads the nation with 24 wins and is second with a 0.53 ERA. Her ERA currently sits first for a single season in school history. Possibly most impressive of all is her strikeout total of 275. This is nearly double the next closest ODAC pitcher (139). She sits second in the nation in the category and has already shattered the school and league record.

Hull becomes the eighth Marlin to be named ODAC Pitcher of the Year and sixth straight.

Duplain earned the All-ODAC First Team nod at third base after batting .368 in conference play this season. She drove in 11 runs in ODAC play, swiping five bases. Overall, Duplain batted .319 with 15 runs and 24 RBI.

Lindsay was named the First Team All-ODAC catcher after an incredible year in conference play. She batted .455 in 20 ODAC games, driving in 11 runs and scoring 10 more. For the season, she hit .327 with four homers and 18 RBI.

Wright was named All-ODAC Third Team after going 15-0 with a 1.36 ERA on the year. She also collected a pair of saves. Her numbers only improved in league action, going 7-0 with a 1.23 ERA.

Richardson was the table-setter for the Marlins this year, scoring 58 runs at the top of the order while swiping an ODAC-leading 56 bases to go with a .390 batting average.
