No. 1 Marlins Ride 17-Game Win Streak into ODAC Contests
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan softball team (33-1/14-0) faces off against a pair of ODAC opponents this week, looking to extend a 17-game winning streak.
The Marlins face Eastern Mennonite University (21-7/9-7) on Tuesday for a doubleheader set for first pitch at 3 p.m. This will be a rematch of last year's ODAC Championship Game where the Marlins took home the title with a 10-9 win in nine innings.
The Royals are hitting .340 as a team and are led by freshmen Savannah Jones (.434 with nine doubles) and Beck Hoskins (.367 with 12 RBI). Senior Lauren Seale is batting .354 with a team-leading 25 RBI. Seale also contributes to the team in the circle going 8-2 this year with a 2.59 ERA. Sophomore Sydney Reath anchors the staff at 10-3 with a 1.86 ERA.
VWC will again be on the road Saturday, traveling to Lynchburg (25-9/10-4), who is second in the ODAC standings, right behind the Marlins. At the plate, the Hornets feature the ODAC leader in RBI in Taylor Mabry with 38 RBI, who also hits .413 with five home runs. Skylar Dickens is currently third in the ODAC, hitting .446. The Marlins expect to face Stephanie Hogan (8-2 with a 2.60 ERA) and Conner English (7-7 with a 2.67 ERA).
Hanna Hull (17-1) will again look to continue her dominance of opponents this year as she has 197 strikeouts, which is already eighth all-time on the VWC career leaderboard, and she is currently second in strikeouts in a season. Hull is only 21 punch-outs away from tying Brittany Brown's record of 218 set in the 2010 season.
Courtney Wright is also still a perfect 13-0 during her freshman campaign and will look to continue her strong start with a pair of appearances this week.
Cassetty Howerin continues to lead the ODAC in batting average at .480, but is now second in RBI (36) and home runs (8). Kiersten Richardson paces the ODAC in stolen bases at 46, 22 more than the player in second.
