Strike Out Cancer Highlights Weekly Softball Schedule

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College softball team continues its ODAC schedule highlighted by its ninth annual Strike Out Cancer Game on Saturday against Roanoke College.

The Marlins will take to the road to face No. 15 Randolph Macon College (20-4/5-3) on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. They will host Roanoke College (18-8/7-3) on Saturday for the Strike Out Cancer Game.

The match up with Randolph-Macon will plot the two best pitchers in the ODAC against each other with Hanna Hull and R-MC's Candance Whittemore facing off against each other. Hull is first in strikeouts with 164 while Whittemore is second with 86. Hull has 15 wins while Whittemore has 13 for the Yellow Jackets.

At the plate, R-MC looks to Brandi Mulvena who hits .340 and Savannah Wood who is putting together a solid freshman campaign, hitting .338. Whittemore (13-1) has thrown 102.2 innings with a 1.43 ERA.

Saturday will feature the Marlins' Strike Out Cancer Game. The game, scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, will see pregame festivities start at 12:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the DJ, food, activities for all ages, and an impressive silent auction including autographed items by David Wright, Nolan Ryan, Yogi Berra, Peyton Manning, and Christian Laettner.

This year's goal is set at $17,587, which would be the ninth-year VWC total to $100,000 with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Tickets are available for $5 at the gate on the day of the game.

Strike Out Cancer is hosted in memory of Elaine F. Sears, mother of head softball coach Brandon Elliott, who lost her battle with cancer in 2008.

Roanoke College is hitting .334 as a team and boasts a 1.47 team ERA. There are five different arms that the Maroons will throw against their competition with Teresa Wagner leading the way with 58.1 innings and a 0.48 ERA. Senior Rachel Guilliams is hitting .389 with 15 RBI to pace the offense.

The Marlins have continued their winning ways on the backs of the Hull, Kiersten Richardson, Cassetty Howerin, Blake Henderson, and Courtney Wright. But, it is a team effort as the Marlins are hitting .357 as a squad. Sophomore Jessica Lindsay was just named ODAC Player of the Week after going 9-for-13 with two walks, two home runs, and four RBI on the week. Hull was once again named ODAC Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with a save.
